John Travolta and Kelly Preston host fundraiser for Narconon in Hawai’i

HONOLULU, HAWAI’I: Kelly Preston and her husband, John Travolta, were hosting a lavish dinner celebration today, Thursday to support a new Narconon rehab center in Hawai’i.
“This is my baby,” Preston told The Associated Press of her efforts to provide drug education, prevention and rehabilitation services.
A Hawaii native, Kelly Preston said she came home to help address the islands’ growing problem with crystal meth. She started three years ago, working with school and government officials to launch Narconon in Hawai’i.
The dinner will raise money to support that program as well as a new residential drug-rehabilitation facility. The 60-bed Narconon Hawai’i center is expected to open in “two to three months,” Preston said.
She was quoted saying: “This is my first one” and ”I would love to continue doing it on the islands — on each of maybe four or five of the main islands — and I’d love another one also here, a juvenile facility.”
She also told the local TV station (KgMB9): “I know that this program works. I know that it gets a 75% success rate. It’s amazing.”
Narconon is a worldwide drug rehabilitation and education network with facilities in 40 countries. It is based on the principles of L. Ron Hubbard, founder of Scientology. It is also one of the most effective drug rehab programs. http://www.narconon.org Narconon has more than 100 drug prevention and treatment centers around the world.
“Our goal collectively as an organization is to help with collaboration of everybody else, have a drug free Hawaii,” said Narconon Hawaii president Myron Thompson.
As you know, Kelly Preston and Travolta, who have been married 15 years, are both Scientologists and as humanitarians both have been supporting efforts to get kids off drugs for a long time. Read my prior article on this very point: Kelly Speaks Out Against Drugs.

Here is a story about a man named Chad Bloom whose life was destroyed by drugs until he found the Narconon program:
Kapolei resident Chad Bloom, 21, told KGMB9 (local Hawai’i tv) his life was a mess before Narconon.
“That’s when I quit work. And that’s all I was doing. Going out to find more drugs. Going out to find where they were. And using them,” Bloom said.
Desperate for help Bloom entered the Narconon rehab program in Oklahoma last December. He graduated from the program in mid-April and today says he is drug free.
“I’m very confident that I’m done with it. I have no doubts what so every that I won’t go back to it,” Bloom said.
“It’s wonderful. I mean, he’s back and he’s that person I always knew he could be,” added Lari Bloom, Chad’s mother.

Narconon Hawai’i has been delivering basic drug education in Hawai’i schools since January 2005. To date, Narconon drug educators have given presentations to more than 23,000 students in 65 schools. Analysis of initial responses from those students have shown positive results–informal surveys show that 89% stated they would never start taking drugs, or were now against drugs as a result of the Narconon presentations.
A year ago, Preston and Narconon Hawai’i teamed up with other island drug prevention groups to distribute free “parent kits”, designed to help parents learn how to more effectively talk to their children about the dangers of drug abuse. The kit, introduced by Lt. Governor James “Duke” Aiona and University of Hawai’i football coach June Jones, includes essential information and simple lesson plans most anyone can follow. As a result of the distribution campaign, which included television public service announcements featuring Preston airing repeatedly on all four local networks, thousands of families requested and received the free kit.
Honolulu Mayor Mufi Hannemann proclaimed the week of May 20 - May 27, 2006 “Teaching our Kids the Truth About Drugs Week” to commemorate the launch of the kit distribution on the islands.
