“I grew up on Oahu and I know what kids have to deal with. They are faced with pressures to experiment with and do drugs.

L. Ron Hubbard — A Writer

L. Ron Hubbard — A Writer

“Without a doubt, L. Ron Hubbard is one of the most prolific and influential writers of the twentieth century.” — Dr. Stephen V. Whaley

By 1950, the name L. Ron Hubbard had graced the pages of some two hundred classic publications of the day, including multiple issues of Argosy, Top-Notch and Thrilling Adventures. Among his more than 15 million words of pre-1950 fiction were tales spanning all primary genres: action, suspense, mystery, westerns and even the occasional romance. Enlisted to “humanize” a machine-dominated science fiction, the name L. Ron Hubbard next became synonymous with such classics as Final Blackout and To the Stars—rightfully described as among the most defining works in the whole of the genre. No less memorable were his fantasies of the era, including the perennially applauded Fear, described as a pillar of all modern horror. He was considered one of the high production writers of the pulp era and as a result of the frequency with which his stories were published wrote under 16 different pen names.

In the early 1980s, Ron returned to the world of popular fiction with two monumental blockbusters: the internationally bestselling Battlefield Earth and the ten-volume Mission Earth series—each volume likewise topping international bestseller lists in what amounted to an unprecedented publishing event. His screenplays, now being turned into novels, continue this tradition, when in 1998, Ai! Pedritio!—When Intelligence Goes Wrong and in 1999, A Very Strange Trip became his sixteenth and seventeenth fiction New York Times bestsellers.

L. Ron Hubbard was a professional writer for over 50 years and wrote over 550 fiction and non-fiction books in 35 different fields.

His works include 60 million written words, not counting his 136 theatrical and screen plays, 3 music albums and over 100 poems and lyrics.

L. Ron Hubbard once stated: “I guess I must have written that line ‘By L. Ron Hubbard’ many thousands of times between 1930 and 1950. And every time I wrote it I had a sense of starting something pleasing, something exciting and, it worked out, something that would sell. 93 percent of everything I wrote was accepted first draft, first submission. I wrote adventure, detective stories, air stories, science fiction, fantasy, technical articles, you name it. Production was about 100,000 words a month most months, done on an electric typewriter, working an average of three hours a day, three days a week. Arthur J. Burks, Ed Bodin, Bob Heinlein, John Campbell, Willy Ley, Isaac Asimov, these and the rest of the greats were my friends.”

Writer’s of the Future - http://www.writersofthefuture.com

Established and sponsored by L. Ron Hubbard in 1983, the “Writers Award Contest” was a budding competition aimed at discovering, and eventually publishing, deserving amateur and aspiring writers. The field of speculative fiction and fantasy, was chosen not only for Mr. Hubbard’s love of and success within the genre-but for the freedom of imagination and expression it provided as what he described as the “herald of possibility.”
