Russia has to indemnify to the Church of Scientology
M.R. SAHUQUILLO.Madrid. The European Court of Human Rights condemned Russia yesterday for violating the rights to freedom of gathering and association of the Church of Scientology of Moscow. The Court also determined that Russia failed to comply with the right to the freedom of thought, belief and religion. Russia will have to pay 10.000 Euros to the Church of Scientology in the concept of “moral damages”, as determined by the resolution made public yesterday, and another 15.000 for judicial costs.
Per the Court, Russia violated these two articles by repeatedly refusing to register the Church of Scientology Moscow as an association of religious character between 1998 and 2005. A negative of the Russian courts which, per the judgment of the Court “does not have any legal foundation”.
The Church of Scientology, which assures having 200.000 members in Russia, had been officially registered as a religious association with juridical personality in 1994. When in 1997 a new law came in force on the freedom of belief and religious associations, which obliged the religious associations with a juridical personality to re-register themselves, the Church of Scientology did not manage to register itself.
